The Algorithm Changed Again?

In 2022, I made it my mission to read more industry-related books. While exploring my next page-turner, I said to my husband, “I really wish there was an up-to-date book on social media.” To which he responded, “I’m sure there is!” I explained to him that there are thousands of books dedicated to social media—many of which I have read. But, unlike some other trades and practices, social media and the methodology behind it is changing DAILY! Is it possible to keep current on all the platforms?

Yes! Try these seven tips to help you understand the social algorithms and become the SOCIAL BOSS you can be.

  1. Engage on the platforms.

It’s like coaching a sport you have never played. If you are not on the social channel, regularly using it and interacting, it’s nearly impossible to know the ins-and-outs of how it works and when it’s changing.

  1. Read daily.

Find industry outlets that post articles and blogs regularly. Later.com is a golden destination of mine to learn about the latest Instagram algorithm changes and feed updates. We have the curse and luxury of a 24/7 news cycles—take advantage of it and find sources you trust to provide timely, accurate information.

  1. Follow influencers.

Find influencers you can relate to and who share content you enjoy. Believe it or not there are thousands of influencers—especially on TikTok—that have 100% of their focus on social media content and strategy. Don’t know where to start? Simply type into the search bar of TikTok: “social media algorithm” and hundreds of videos like “TikTok Algorithm Explained” appear.

  1. Analyze what others are doing.

Micro-influencers, macro-influencers, friends, brands, organizations. Create your own case study of what you observe to be working (or not working), and find strategies to help you grow your channels.

  1. Make it part of your work routine.

As soon as I think I have the latest social feature or trick figured out, something new comes up. It’s easy to keep your head down and focus only on your content and strategy, but to ensure I stay current and know what’s working online, I read, analyze, and listen to influencers as part of my weekly work routine. I’m constantly learning without even realizing it.

  1. Check Google News.

It sounds like a no brainer, but one of my favorites (and the easiest!) things to do is go to Google, search “social media,” and press the News tab. More times than not I find an article published within the last 12 hours containing information I didn’t know.

  1. Test it out.

John Barrow once said, “If you never try, you’ll never know what you are capable of.” You’ve done your research, examined what others are doing, and now it’s your turn to give it a whirl. Every social media platform is different. While there are tips and tricks to make your content fall into the algorithm magic spot, until you dive in, you’ll never know what works for you or your brand.
